Toros’s History and Philosophy

Cormons is the largest and, in terms of number of producers, the most important town of the denominations of Collio and Isonzo in the province of Gorizia in Friuli . Already from the name of the province it is possible to guess that it is, in a sense, very different from the rest of Italy, a truly extraordinary reality where the mixing of Italian, Slovenian and even German identities has created a unique culture.

In fact, Cormons is Krmin in Slovenian and you just need to cross the Judrio torrent , which divides San Giovanni al Natisone in the province of Udine from Cormons , to understand that something very significant has changed, something that can also be understood by scrolling through the list of producers’ names of the town, which includes Italian surnames like Bastiani and Venturini along with others like Polencic , Princic , and Sturm . The area north of the city to the Slovenian border provides another confirmation with the names of the place, such as Zegla, Plessiva and Novali.

The cellars of Franco Toros , among the leaders in the town for the quality of its wines, are located right in this area, where a synthesis between various factors, such as the fresh local microclimate, the gentle slopes on which the vineyards are located and the typical soil known as “ponca”, formed by layers of sandstone marl, contribute to creating one of the most appreciated and drunk white wines. Franco Toros’ great-grandfather , Edoardo , moved to Novaliin the early twentieth century, and the family initially put all their time and effort into a mixed agriculture where cattle breeding also assumed primary importance. The land hosting the vineyards, for example, was once the stables for cows, and today it has significantly expanded compared to its original size.

It was thanks to Franco Toros’ winemaking skills that the winery changed direction and took flight, with its fragrant, expressive and full of character wines, a series of offers that boast such purity that, over the years, has allowed it to win prizes and awards both in competitions and on the pages of the major guides in Italian wine. The real specialties of Novali are Pinot Blanc , Sauvignon and Friulano , and few other producers know how to grow them to transform them into wine with the same fidelity and passion of this modest, but extremely talented, vintner.
