Unterganzner

Unterganzner

(CARDANO – BOLZANO) Since 1626 the Mayr family has been taking care of its vineyards in South Tyrol. The current owner Josephus produces excellent Platt & Pignater Sauvignon, Lagrein Lamerein, Composition Reif, Gironde and Tyrol and Lagrein Riserva wines.

Unterganzner’s History and Philosophy

The ‘ South Tyrol is generally thought of as a region where wine production is dominated by cooperatives and major trading houses. From a statistical point of view this statement is certainly true, but recent decades have seen a growing presence on the markets of smaller producers-growers and also the birth of an association that brings them together in the attempt, widely successful, to give them a greater identity and visibility.

Among these small producers, one of the leading figures is Josephus Mayr and his Unteganzner estate , a property that has been in the possession of his family since 1626. Following the tradition of this alpine area, the company has passed from generation to generation to the eldest son, now represented by Josephus Mayr who, with his wife Barbara , has taken over all the activities in the 8 hectares of owned vineyards under his direction, together with work in the cellar, administration and marketing. A family winery in the true sense of the word.

The estate is located where the Adige and Isarco rivers meet and enjoys different types of soil: river pebbles, porphyry rock and others of glacial origin. Despite the northern latitude of the estate, this is a warm area, as evidenced by the presence of olive trees that provide the harvest for extra-virgin olive oil, the best in South Tyrol. The house has carefully studied the geology, altitude, exposure and other factors necessary for an intelligent choice of grape varieties to plant.

The wines of Unterganzner

The Pignater vineyard at high altitude, for example, provides a lot of grapes for the whites of the house and also for Merlot , while the more sheltered and warmer area of Boden is reserved for grapes that ripen late. Plattit is used for Cabernet and Lagrein .

As the local tradition dictates, the offer of wines is wide, but rigorous work both in the vineyards and in the cellar leads to a range that is rich in both choice and quality: the excellent Platt & Pignater Sauvignon ; The Lagrein Lamerein harvested later; the Composition Reif complex , a blend of Bordeaux and local Lagrein, the Gironde and Tyrol ; the Cabernet Riserva Kampill ; and the amiable Lagrein Riserva , broad, mature, silky and long.
