Vignaquaranti’s History and Philosophy

The Cantina Vignaquaranti is located in Quaranti , in the southern tip of the Monferrato Astigiano which flanks the Langhe , in the province of Asti land of great wines, the so-called “white lands” , is immersed in an exciting landscape with historic vineyards for the production of Barbera Dogc and facing south-east, and the other half of  Arneis and Nascetta, original Piedmontese vines .

History teaches through the etymology the deep meaning of this area of Monferrarese: “fertile mountain”, but even more relevant is the etymology of Quaranti, uncertain, but which from historical sources seems to indicate “a center founded by forty Roman freedmen” and other meanings, but it is on this that attention is placed, because it is therefore in the DNA of this land that the choice of life is freedom.

The history of the winery Vignaquaranti is this, a history of freedom and choices courageous, where friendship and care for the land, united by core values, have made that three friends Peter Cioli,  Francesco Baghi and Guido Christmas , succeeded to obtain that freedom of choice and work by detaching from the social cellars , an important reality in Piedmont , the first was born here in 1891Italian social winery, a reality that somehow prevented the expansion and being autonomous, for those who, like in this case, had the need for their own identity and competitiveness. And so, that to the strength of the territory is added university knowledge and Milanese urban culture , which looks at wine , not as a pleasant drink, but as a refined product.

The wines of Vignaquaranti

2009 sees the project and the launch of the company. What has now become a production of excellent wine, with low costs, also begins an ethical choice, but of undisputed excellence and a few years later with the collaboration of the oenologist Guido Beltrami, who with his precious competence, suggestions and mastery of Gianluca De Faveri expert for the cultivation to which the vineyard is entrusted the fruits begin to be seen: Barbera d ‘Asti DOCG and a Barbera Superiore DOCG 2011, the first wines produced.

In 2014, the Veronelli Guide recognizes these utopists as the first two stars for Barbera d’Asti Rablè, which make that choice of dreams of original freedom come true, in the same year it will be the turn of the two whites derived from Nascetta and Arneis grapes.

Growth is gradual in the priority attention to quality: from 6000 bottles of Barbera red in 2011 to 14,000 thousand in 2016 and with the aspiration to arrive soon at 30 thousand bottles. The new bet of Vignaquaranti is now with another historical grape variety, which has made history in Piedmont, Nebbiolo.
